Hair color is one of the most profitable services you can offer in your salon. It can also be one of the most challenging, however if you can become a coloring expert you will fill your books, have return customers and receive referrals from happy clients. Permanent hair color comes in almost every shade imaginable. From the palest ash blonde to the darkest blue black, permanent hair color can help you to create the looks your clients demand.

One of the factors that sets permanent hair color apart from other types of hair color, such as temporary, demi-premanent and semi-permanent color, is that permanent hair color enters and stays in the hairís cortex until it grows out or is cut off. Your hair is made up of layers. The inner most layer, the cortex, contains the molecules that make up your hair color. The outer layer, the cuticle, is made up of small overlapping scales. These scales must be lifted by the chemicals in the developer so that the hair color molecules can enter and replace your hairís natural color molecules.

On virgin hair, hair that has never been colored, permanent hair color can lift the color two levels. If your hair has been colored and you want to go lighter, you will need to pre-lighten it with bleach. Hair color does not lift hair color. Normally in a lightening service, you would want to use demi or semi-permanent color to tone the pre-lightened hair. Permanent color is sometimes too harsh for bleached hair.

These products should only be used by professionals. They contain chemicals that can irritate your skin and cause blindness if you get them in your eyes. Always do a sensitivity test at least 24 hours before you apply the color. Do not use permanent hair color on your eyebrows since it can cause severe and permanent damage to your eyes or blindness.
