Tips to attain beautiful skin

‘Perfect’ is probably the most highly desired aspect of beauty and one can cross any lengths to attain it. With perfect beauty, comes perfect skin, which is the key in looking good at all times and conditions. “If you were born with lovely skin, consider yourself lucky” says makeup artist Bobbi Brown. “For the rest of us, the quest for a good complexion often proves frustrating, as so much of what affects our skin is completely out of our control.”

There are certain factors which play a role, like good genes. Genetics plays a big part in our skin, and no potions or lotions will ever change the genetics of your skin. Another detrimental factor is stress. Stress can actually over dry already dry skin, and it can also trigger breakouts in oily skin.

But the real secret to beautiful skin lies in taking care of the issues you can control – getting adequate sleep, drinking plenty of water, and engaging in physical activity. “Good skin is not just about what you put on your skin,” Brown explains, “but how you conduct your life”.

Both smoking and sun can age your face measurably. “My advice is to be your own skin expert,” says Brown. “Look at your face in the mirror and see what’s going on. If it’s summer, your face may be dried on the surface – thanks to air conditioning – but oilier underneath. If it’s the middle of winter, or if you are traveling a lot by plane, chances are your skin is super dry. The idea is not to have just one product or one daily routine, but a flexible program that makes your skin healthy, smooth and clear.”

Keeping this in mind, here are a few useful tips for you:

Stay clean and clear
If you have dry or sensitive skin, cleansing of the skin should be done with a gentle, non-stripping gel cleanser. In case of oily or acne-prone skin, find a gentle gel formula that’s made specifically for your skin type, and follow with a non-alcoholic toner. Those containing alpha-hydroxyl acids (AHAs) work well to help smooth the skin texture. Also remember not to over-cleanse your skin. if you have washed your face a night before, you don’t need to do it again in the morning again. Simply rinse your skin and pat it dry instead. The oils produced by your skin at night are needed by the skin.

Scrub-a-dub-dub
There are certain day when you need to exfoliate. At such times, use a gentle but grainy scrub. If you have got sensitive skin, do not use a scrub. If you have oily skin, you will have to exfoliate at least twice a week, concentrating on blackhead-prone areas like the nose and chin.

Moisten
Use a rich moisturizer that your skin fully absorbs. And before going to bed, use an even heavier moisturizing cream. Oilier skin types should use a gel, oil-free moisturizer or mattefying cream. Before applying make-up, take a minute for your moisturizer to absorb, and then start doing your make-up.

Take off the make-up

At the end of the day, start your cleansing process. Use a non-oily eye makeup remover on a clean cotton pad to wipe away mascara, eyeliner and eyeshadow. Oily removers can aggravate your eyes and cause redness. Once your eye makeup is removed, use your cleansing gel or lotion to remove your foundation, concealer, blush and powder. At the end, dip a Q-tip into the remover and run it gently over your eyelashes to eliminate any residual mascara or water-proof mascara clogged on to the ends.

Exfoliation
Exfoliating your skin helps getting rid of those old skin cells that accumulate on the surface. It will also make your skin glow, and let your moisturizer absorb better. Just remember to use gentle products, especially if you have sensitive skin. Exfoliation is like using a scrub; it removes all unnecessary stuff gathering on your skin!

No touching
Most of the oil and dirt particles added to your skin come from your hands. So try to keep those hands away from the skin. Most of us tend to pick on our chin or play with pimples and bumps on the face. “Habits like these are difficult to change,” says Brown, “but both your make up and general comportment will benefit if you stop.”

When to visit a professional
Only when it becomes uncontrollable should you pay a visit to a dermatologist. “When things get serious and you can’t handle a skincare problem on your own,” says Brown, “don’t waste your time and money at the cosmetic counter – seek professional help.”
