Thinning Hair For African American Woman

Question: “I am a healthy 39-year-old female, and I’ve noticed in the last six months or so that my hair is thinning, especially in the crown of my head. Any suggestions? My beautician doesn’t seem to know what the problem is, so we’re trying to maintain the hair in that area. I’ve also noticed the hair length on my right side in longer than the length on my left side. I’ve tried sleeping on the different sides and even bought a silk pillow case. I constantly have to trim the right side to even it out. Help!” -Hopelessly Thinning, Snook, Texas Answer: “You could be experiencing hair thinning for a number of reasons. No. 1 is heredity. Do women in your family on either side have this problem? No. 2 is stress, which can cause a number of problems with out bodies. No. 3 are you currently taking any medication that may cause this side effect? The list could go on and on. My suggestion is to talk to your female members on both sides to see if hair thinning is a family trait. Many times we are stressed and don’t even know it. If this is the case, you may want to somehow reduce your stress level. If stress or heredity is not the problem, then you should consult a dermatologist as well as your physician to help determine what the problem is. In regards to your hair being uneven, this is a common problem that many people experience. One side always appears to grow faster than the other. Last but not least, as we age our bodies are contacting changing.” -Telona K. Wilson, celebrity hair stylist, Ebony Magazine October 2006 Issue
