NOTE: The statements below are not intended to disrespect or offend Canadian citizens and the beautiful country of Canada. We are simply passionate about this issue and want to express our displeasure the Canadian government which is allowing this annual senseless slaughter of baby harp seals to happen year after year. The government lies about the facts and use every excuse to resume their inhumane acts on these creatures.
The Canadian government has consistently lied to the world and their own citizens, as if we are all fools, insisting that this hunt is "sustainable" and "humane". What is humane about being shot and allowed to suffer? What is humane about being clubbed over the head and skinned alive? What is humane about being shot and allowed to drown under the ice? WHAT?. We ask that all Canadians and the caring WORLD call out to the Canadian government and insist they stop this ruthless, inhumane senseless killing of Baby Harp Seal Pups.
You have probably heard and will continue to hear the typical B.S about how people today depend on these seals for food and fur, 350,000 seals for food and fur for the "out of work fisherman along the east coast" ?? Apparently the Canadian government thinks we're as ignorant as they are to believe this crock, as if we are living hundreds of years ago and honestly need the FUR or SEAL FOOD ???? The truth is Seal Meat is very NOT popular and Seal Pelts make MONEY. Lots of MONEY. As a matter of fact the Seal Pelts are fetching more $$$ this year. Go figure over 90% being sold to CHINA and RUSSIA. Seals are stripped of their “pelts” (skin and hair) and the rest is left to rot. Let us be real for a moment and understand what is available to us to survive on a daily basis,. Do we really need FUR???? The truth is that people of Canada are mislead by their own government to believe these lies, and the real truth is that the Canadian government is full of B.S and is only interested in resurrecting a ruthless and senseless fur market. YES, GREED and MONEY for the already RICH special interest groups which put clueless followers like Loyola Hearn in office to support their interests ONLY not the people along the east coast of Canada. Clearly these politicians are puppets that have their head, clearly not on their shoulders, that they don’t even comprehend the seriousness of the opposition against this hunt which will ultimately put them out of business and cause more problems for the Canadian economy.
No matter how they slice it to the public...These seals are being killed inhumanely and are suffering by the hundreds of thousands every year. To put it mildly we are very upset at the lies spilled out by the Canadian government, especially the Canadian Fisheries and Oceans headed by the less than Honorable Loyola Hearn, MP who is an immature spineless and careless idiot following in the foot steps of the last bozo in office before him, not to mention a whole circus of them that were in office for the past 40 years or more. These are the real clowns that lead to the collapse of the fishing industry along the coast and are using these poor seals to fill in the void. This spring the great white nursery off Canada’s Atlantic coast will be stained with blood as hundreds of thousands of seals are slaughtered for their fur. Canada's
Department of Fisheries and Oceans has increased this year's kill quota,
allowing more than 355,000 harp, hooded and grey seals to be clubbed and
shot to death in the largest and cruelest slaughter of marine mammals anywhere on the planet.
The harp seal can live up to 35 years in the wild but the vast majority hunted every year (98% last year) is less than 12 weeks old. These pups have yet to eat their first solid food or learn how to swim. When the large sealing vessels arrive, they literally have nowhere to escape.
Whether the seals bleed to death from a hakapik, club or are shot from a moving boat, the seals suffer an agonizing and terrifying death. Shockingly, veterinarians and hunt observers have documented seals being skinned alive while still conscious. This is an enormous amount of cruelty to satisfy the European fashion industry with fur accessories and trinkets.
Although the majority of Canadians oppose this cruel and unnecessary hunt, it is promoted, protected and subsidized every year with their tax dollars.

To the editor:
I am one of millions of people who are very much against this murdering of baby seals and am ashamed to be called Canadian.
We are known the world over for cruelty to defenseless animals. Hunting seems to be a way of life, be it bear, deer, buffalo, wolves etc.
We are looked on in many countries as uncivilized and still living in the 18th century.
This is going to make a difference to Canada when it comes to the tourist season and without that, we are dead for what else is there?
I understand the numbers have been down in this area for the last four years.
All the shootings in Toronto haven't helped So all you people out there who think that this is sport, think again. It is cold-blooded murder.
If you feel like killing, then go to Afghanistan with a gun and see how brave you are when you have someone facing you with a weapon, not just a poor defenseless beautiful animal.

Announced today by Loyola Hearn of Canada that Seal Hunt will continue and quota is even raised this year to 335,000 Seal Pups to 2010. This is unbeleivable! How can Canada get away with this? It does not make any sense. Please cry out to help stop this senseless slaughter.

Yesterday, Heather and Paul McCartney, joined by The HSUS team and a large contingent of international journalists, visited the harp seal nursery on the ice floes in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Their visit focused global attention on the grim fate awaiting the newborn seals.

This year Canada has pledged to slaughter 400 000 baby seals, all less than 12 weeks of age. The 2005 'reported' kill quota was at 317 672. This slaughter is a government sponsored killing spree in order to win the votes of out of work fishermen. Since 2003 nearly 1 million seals have been butchered. Seals are normally clubbed to death. If still alive, once a seal is clubbed it is skinned alive. There is no reason why one of the richest countries in the world should sponsor such a hunt. The government has spent over 20 million dollars in attempts to find markets for seal body parts. Organizations that photograph, or film the hunt without government permission risk imprisonment in what is a huge propaganda and censorship campaign.
