To the editor:
I am one of millions of people who are very much against this murdering of baby seals and am ashamed to be called Canadian.
We are known the world over for cruelty to defenseless animals. Hunting seems to be a way of life, be it bear, deer, buffalo, wolves etc.
We are looked on in many countries as uncivilized and still living in the 18th century.
This is going to make a difference to Canada when it comes to the tourist season and without that, we are dead for what else is there?
I understand the numbers have been down in this area for the last four years.
All the shootings in Toronto haven't helped So all you people out there who think that this is sport, think again. It is cold-blooded murder.
If you feel like killing, then go to Afghanistan with a gun and see how brave you are when you have someone facing you with a weapon, not just a poor defenseless beautiful animal.

Announced today by Loyola Hearn of Canada that Seal Hunt will continue and quota is even raised this year to 335,000 Seal Pups to 2010. This is unbeleivable! How can Canada get away with this? It does not make any sense. Please cry out to help stop this senseless slaughter.

Yesterday, Heather and Paul McCartney, joined by The HSUS team and a large contingent of international journalists, visited the harp seal nursery on the ice floes in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Their visit focused global attention on the grim fate awaiting the newborn seals.
Appalled by the Canadian government’s insistence on supporting the cruel hunt for seal skins, Heather and Paul are calling on newly elected Prime Minister Stephen Harper to end the hunt forever.

The McCartneys' support has been a historic development in the campaign to save baby seals. While on the ice, Paul made the moving statement that, "We just believe that...for this whole place to be a sea of red and for these pups we're seeing to be dead -- just for their fur -- is not something that should be happening in this day and age."
Heather and Paul have also gone on record saying, "Previous Canadian governments have allowed this heartbreaking hunt to continue despite the fact that the majority of its citizens -- as well as those in Europe and America -- are opposed to it. We have complete faith that Prime Minister Harper will take swift and decisive action to end the slaughter of these defenseless seal pups for good."

This year Canada has pledged to slaughter 400 000 baby seals, all less than 12 weeks of age. The 2005 'reported' kill quota was at 317 672. This slaughter is a government sponsored killing spree in order to win the votes of out of work fishermen. Since 2003 nearly 1 million seals have been butchered. Seals are normally clubbed to death. If still alive, once a seal is clubbed it is skinned alive. There is no reason why one of the richest countries in the world should sponsor such a hunt. The government has spent over 20 million dollars in attempts to find markets for seal body parts. Organizations that photograph, or film the hunt without government permission risk imprisonment in what is a huge propaganda and censorship campaign.
